About Tinsmith Agriculture
My Great Grandfather was a tinsmith. Like many farmers in this country, he needed a full-time job off the farm to get by because a farming income alone so often doesn't cut it. He started our legacy and we farmed for many years but unfortunately we couldn't keep our mixed operation in the family.
It devastated many family members, myself included.
As I got older, I began to realize just how many ag families face similar challenges with intergenerational transfers of farm and ranch property. Between this and witnessing the increasing villainization of producers, and the rapid decrease in farmland acreage and total number of farms, a fervent zealousness was ignited inside of me. I believe it is my professional calling to assist ag families in navigating the complex legal and tax considerations involved in carrying on a farm or ranch, and to help preserve family outfits across generations.
That's what I care deeply about and, indeed, that's why I became a lawyer.
Agriculture runs in my veins thanks to the Tinsmith. Even though we couldn't keep our farm in the family, I have kept the passion alive by lending a hand on ranches and feedlots throughout southern Alberta, assisting on rodeo grounds, and developing the skills to rekindle my family farm legacy with a cow-calf operation that I will run with my own family someday and leave for future generations of land stewards.
Along the way, I want to give back to the agriculture and rural communities that I'm proud to be a part of. So, I created this project called Tinsmith Agriculture - a convenient resource for free legal and tax information on passing farms and ranches down to the next generation. The site is under construction but on the Blog page you will find articles I write on agricultural succession planning and farm taxation, as well as analyses and commentaries on relevant case law and policy decisions. On the Resources page you will find substantive, practical, downloadable guides to help along the way.
These resources are free and always will be. Period. Resources of this kind are already scarce and inaccessible to ag families as is, and I want to give back to the producers who deserve more than they typically receive.
I will never stop fighting for the common folk. I will never stop fighting for producers. I am in your corner.
Here's to the success and prosperity of your operation. Here's to keeping the lonely places lonely.
Here's to keeping the farm in the family.
My name is Aidan Nicholson.
This is Tinsmith Agriculture.
